"For my thirteenth perfume, I wanted to pay an even more direct homage to his personality. Named after him, Montri conveys aspects of his character and idiosyncrasies, the things he loved and believed in, as well as the fragrances he mostly enjoyed. Wanting to reflect the soul’s eternal character, I went one step further: I imagined what kind of fragrance he would have loved today, had he still been alive".

The pen is me
and I am the pen:
in writing,
the pen gets lost
to become part of the thing
I cannot recall.
- Montri Umavijani
Precious Agarwood came to mind, an ingredient my father knew only as an incense to aid meditation, and not as a fine fragrance component (he passed away in 2006, before Oud would become so widely embraced in the Western perfumery that he admired so much).
I decided to compose a fragrance built around Oud Palao, in a manner and style corresponding to the classic French perfumery tradition. I surrounded Oud with a soft Spice Blend, elegant Florals and noble Woods, but also Orris Butter – thus paying a tribute to one of my father’s most beloved fragrance notes."
MONTRI opens with a gentle cloud of spices: Saffron, Nutmeg, Coriander, Cinnamon, Oregano, contrasted with the tonifying energy of Petitgrain and the subtly gourmand character of the perfumer’s own Dried Fruit Accord.
In the heart,
The deep, soulful beauty of Orris Butter meets the lush Rose of May and Damask Rose, Jasmine Sambac and Ylang-Ylang, along with the edgy undercurrent of a soft Leather Accord and Tobacco accents.
In the base,
The precious Oud Palao shines
in all its complex olfactive glory with
emphasis on suavity, accompanied by Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver,
Cedarwood, Oakwood, and Tonka Bean.
“To me, the purpose of perfume is to generate emotions; these can of course differ for every individual wearer, since each one of us is unique. We should all feel free to wear whatever our heart and senses desire.”
